Over time, Wayang has spread to other islands in the archipelago; such as Madura, Lombok, Sumatera, and Borneo where local performance style and musical background has been develop. Its magical performance has not only enchanted its spectators but also researchers that states Wayang as one of the most beautiful art performances in the world. In 2003, Wayang has been awarded as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, which includes all types of Indonesian Wayang.
Keris
Keris, a dagger forged from different metal with a distinctive, asymmetrical watered appearance called “Pamor” has been known as Indonesian traditional weapon since the ninth century. The beautiful art form of Keris is accentuated with their sheaths that often made from the precious ivory and abound with gold. The aesthetic value of Keris covers the “Dhapur” (form and design of the blade, about a hundred and fifty variants), the “Pamor” (pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, about sixty variants), and “Tangguh” (the age and origin). The blade smith or “Empu” is highly respected craftsmen with additional knowledge of literature, history, supernatural, etc. Keris has been awarded as UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 25 November 2005.
Batik
Batik is no doubt on of Indonesian cultural heritage that roars in the global stage. Its beautiful technique, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton and silk garment pervades the lives of Indonesian from the beginning to the end, infants are carried in the batik sling to bring the child’s good luck and the dead are also shrouded with funerary Batik. Batik is also worn in daily basis, a part of Indonesian business and academicals setting, and also associated with celebrations. In October 2009, Batik has been listed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Saman Dance
Saman Dance or “Dance of Thousand Hands” is the traditional dance of ethnic Gayo of Aceh. Originally performed as prayer dance in customary events, Saman Dance is performed by a group of dancers wearing a traditional uniform with colorful embroidery singing a traditional poem combined with claps of hands, taps on the shoulders and taps on the thighs. The harmonious and vigorous of its movement that is so artistic and exquisite has often left its spectator with awe and admiration, and on 29 December 2001, Saman Dance has been inscribed on UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
